GILA CAREER PATHWAY:
Health Science
Explore Medical Field Career Paths
Selecting from a variety of GILA’s health science classes, high school students can prepare for the State of Alaska Certified Nursing Assistant test—or use courses as a base for other medical field careers. We provide the fundamentals for exploration of health careers, including the roles and responsibilities of health care workers, career and educational opportunities, medical terminology, medical/legal ethics, confidentiality, safety, infection control, technology, problem solving, basic medical skills and anatomy/physiology related to emergency medical care.
Many classes offered at GILA can be applied towards a health science degree or certificate program at UAF. Degree/Certificate programs at UAF that may require these credits are as follows:
• Dental Assistant (Certificate/A.A.S)
• Medical Assistant (Certificate/A.A.S.)
• Healthcare Reimbursement Certificate
• Medical/Dental Reception Certificate
HEALTH CARE CAREERS
Our Health 105 class provides a good overview of the health care industry and the variety of career choices available to students. Health care careers are explored in depth and students choose one area of focus.
CPR & FIRST AID
Students will be provided an opportunity to earn their CPR/First Aid certification. Currently through the Health Academy (a joint effort with YKSD), there is also a chance for students to receive their Emergency Trauma Technician Certification.
WORKPLACE SKILLS
Health 110 focuses on the attributes of a health care professional. Students explore careers and develop a resume, a mission statement, and a personal statement to be used on college or scholarship applications—and, later participate in mock interviews. Health 110 is required by some of UAF’s health science associate degree or certificate program.
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY
Health 100 (offered over 2 semesters) is a class where students will be learning about the language of health care. This class is required by many of UAF’s Health Science associate degree/certificate programs and will help prepare students for any level of health care.
